Shot Introduction to the life of Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar

Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar was born on 26th May 1965, at Dialpura Bbhaika in the southern Malwa of Punjab. Being born to a middle class family, he was the product of the worst of times when Punjab was passing through the darkest period in history.
His father Balwant Singh Bhullar  was a teacher.

He completed his engineering from the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College Ludhiana. He was a bright student as to get into GNE at that time was no mean achievement.

After his engineering he joined a polytechnic institution as a teacher and since then he came to be known as a professor. During this time he is believed to have come into contact with the extremist groups. The memories of Operation Bluestar and the post Indira Gandhi assassination anti-Sikh riots were quite fresh. Moreover there was a sense of persecution whether real or perceived as well among the young men of his time.

In September 1991 he got married to Navneet Kaur. After three months from marraige he went underground.

In December 1991 Prof: Bhullar's father and uncle Manjit Singh Sohi were picked up after the cops could not find him, as they were looking for him in connection with an attack on an IPS officer.
But Prof: Bhullar was later discharged by the trial court in this case on acoount of lack of evidence against him. However his father and uncle never returned home.
One of his cousins was allegedly tortured in police custody to the extent that one of his limbs developed septicaemia and it had to be amputated. With father and uncle gone missing, and they are still missing, and a cousin losing his limb, he was personally devastated.

Prof Bhullar  was later accused of masterminding three bomb blasts; one in Amritsar aimed at Maninderjit Singh Bitta, the another on the life of the then Chandigarh SSP Sumedh Singh Saini, who is now the Director General of Punjab Police, whose contribution to eliminating terrorism in Punjab remains unparalleled and that is the reason he was the target of the bomb attack and the third one outside the Indian Youth Congress aimed at Bitta, who survived while nine persons died in the blast.

In December 1994 prof: Bhullar and his family wenm t to Germany to seek political asylum as they were repeatedly being harassed. Since his name was revealed in the Amritsar bomb blast he used a fake passport. He was detained by the airport authrities at Germany for travelling on fake passoprt. Ultimately he was deported back to India on January 17, 1995.Due to his absence a Higher German  court overruled the decision
In India he was, detained and tried under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention Act) which is no longer in force.
The United nations condemned these laws as " disturbing and completely unacceptable.

And in India he was tired for his alleged involvement in a Bomb Blast leaving 9 persons dead. According to the police officials he is accused of three bomb blasts.
It is important to note that all 133 witnesses called by prosecution failed to support police story and to confirm any involvement of Prof. Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar in 1993 Delhi blast.

Prof: Bhullar is hence convicted to death solely on the bases of extra-judicial confession. The confession which was taken when Prof: Bhullar was in police custody. Prof Bhullar has accused the police for compelling him to sign blank papers while he was in custody and that he had never ever made any such confession during a court trail.
